So. Original plan: collect some data, make a totally sweet-ass visualization of it, print it, frame it, give it to Heather on our wedding day. Nice, right?
As ever, it didn’t quite work out.
For one: Illustrator is really hard. This looks nothing like it does in my head. Had to make a lot of compromises. Two: I didn’t finish it in time. Partially related to the previous point, partially related to me not having this idea far enough in advance (about 3 days). Three: No privacy while Heather is at home! And she took a day off work during those 3 days! Making my deadline effectively 2 days! Having never even used Illustrator! Without even owning a copy of Illustrator!
So. Yeah.
Regardless, I kind of like how it turned out. I had a much better idea in mind (two, actually) for the timeline portion, but I wasn’t able to get a good enough grasp on Illustrator to make it happen (see point one).
Now I have a year before our first anniversary to get better at Illustrator and make a way better version depicting our first year together.
Click to see it big, by the way.

Today I was eating a cupcake when the phone rang. I panicked and stuffed the entire cupcake into my mouth. I still don't know why I did that. MLIA

This sweet man.
He whispered in my ear. He told me how his wife thinks he looks like an old man with a cane, so he brought a long umbrella with him instead. He leaned gently on it the entire time.
And then while he showed me an old photograph of him and his buddies, all at age 19, he recounted the time that they ran into Hitler outside of Rome and how it made him feel.
And then he asked me if when he dies, whether my generation will step up to take care of his homeless veteran friends. I told him that we would.
I don’t even know his name.

Château de Noisy, Celles, Houyet, Namur, Belgium (via missionabandoned)
Le Château de Noisy (also named Château Miranda) was built by the English architect Milner in 1866 as a summer home for the family of the Count of Liedekerke-Beaufort. The family stayed there until World War 2, when the castle was briefly occupied by the Nazi’s. In 1958, the NMBS (the Belgian railroad company) used it as a home to shelter the railroadmen’s children and wives.
Since 1991 the building is abandoned. The village of Celles tried several times to buy the castle and its ground but the family doesn’t want to take distance of the castle. The building has over 500 windows, which are almost all shattered along with several of the staircases inside. There is still a clock tower of 56 meters tall. The castle is popular amongst urban explorers.

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed”

Tumblr just broke into the Top 100!
Please welcome our new Director of Scaling and Sysops.
Watching the community grow so quickly over the past few months has been humbling and inspiring. It’s also presented huge new scaling challenges that have quickly become a full-time job.
So we’re psyched to be welcoming Andrew Terng to the team to make sure Tumblr is fast and stable while we get everyone in the world blogging. Andrew just moved back to NYC from California where he had been scaling Delicious at Yahoo for the past two years. Welcome, Andrew!
This is an amazing opportunity you guys have given us and we’re working hard to make sure your experience here only gets better. :)

Vanja Mrgan: “Bearded: The Series”
Vanja was sitting on the toilet (thanks for that, Vanja!) reading a Conan story, when it abruptly occurred to him: “Conan should have a beard!” He immediately (well, almost immediately) went to work, reimagining a number of his favorite pop-culture icons as grade-B beard-sporting badasses.
Check his site, aptly titled Beards and Bellies, for ongoing project updates.

On Nov. 17, 2009, Earth will pass through the 1466 stream again, but this time closer to the center. Based on the number of meteors observed in 2008, Vaubaillon can estimate the strength of the coming display: five hundred or more Leonids per hour. The times provided are optimal view hours for PST, but the Leonid Meteor shower may last up to two days so there may be other times for optimal viewing.

The Things We Do For Art of the Day: Artist Dominic Wilcox attached a metal On/Off switch to his head with wig tape and kept it there, day and night, for a month.
Wilcox says:
I remember after leaving the place where it was done I had to overtake some people on the path. I knew they would see it, so that was a big moment, then after that I relaxed a little. I went into a pub once and ordered a drink. It felt like the music and pool balls came to a stop for a second or so. Then started up again.
