Who is Max’s mom? Someone once told me that Goofy was crushing on clarabelle, but I think her boyfriend in horace. So random, lol but I’m just curious
Alright, where to begin.
In the 50s Walt wanted to give Goofy a whole new revamp. His name was George Geef and he was married and had a son named junior.
The wife was mostly a VO off-screen or a pair of legs. This is their son, Junior.
In the 90s there was merchandise released for young girls, Minnie N Me, featuring Minnie, Daisy, Penny, and some others. Penny could only be explained as a counterpart for Goofy. Note how she clearly makes sense as a genes source for Junior.
Also released in the 90s, A Goofy Troop premiered.
Here’s where things get the most messy.
In the 30s Goofy worked closely with Mickey and Donald as a trio of bachelors. Then in the 50s Goofy has a wife and kid and a job. According to the Goof Troop canon, Goofy went to high school in Spoonerville. He was a cheerleader with Peg (Pete’s future wife). Then “SOMETHING” happened and he disappeared from town. Then he came back to Spoonerville with an 11 year old son (NOT a redhead named Junior), and moved in next to Pete and Peg with their son Pete jr and their daughter Pistol. Hmmm.
In A Goofy Movie Max and PJ are in middle school which is post Goof Troop. Now they live in the not so fictional American town of Columbus, Ohio. They’re still neighbors but it’s just Pete and PJ, no Peg or Pistol in sight.
In 2000 Goofy gains a love interest in the college librarian Mrs Marpole. In A Goof Troop he had a fling with a teacher, Mrs Pennypacker. She’s not a redhead but the use of Penny in her name was a pretty odd decision.
In The Three Musketeers is when Goofy and Clarabelle get their crackship. It works because Mickey and Donald get their women but there really wasn’t anyone to pair Goofy up with. Which is probably why Clarabelle got a part and Horace doesn’t have a role.
So there’s so many plot holes in the Goofy-verse, it’s absolutely ridiculous. And rather frustrating. What happened to his redheaded son? What happened to Penny? What happened when he graduated high school? Does it have anything to do with going to college for three years and then dropping out? Was it because of Max? Then when did they and Pete and PJ move to Ohio without Pete’s wife and daughter? When Pete and Goofy because friends is that when Goofy snubbed Mickey and Donald? Max calls Donald Goofy’s best friend but he sure didn’t seem interested in picking them up on the side of the road when they needed a ride… (I’m reading too much into that one, I’m just making a joke, it’s a little cameo, it’s just meant to be cute).
Clearly the Goofy universe starting from the 90s is suppose to be a whole other thing. But the fact that Donald and Mickey exist at all is a bit of a deal breaker for that excuse. It’s a big complicated mess. I love it, but it makes no sense. It’s definitely the most frustrating of the Disney canons. But it sure produced some good movies and characters…

I am sure you have things in your life you don’t like talking about, too. I don’t talk about my mother.
((Probably a little OOC, sorry about that. I wanted to leave it up for interpretation but also explore a side of Max that we’ve never seen -and probably never will- and this was the best I could come up with. Don’t hate me too much, ok? XD))
EDIT:
It has come to my attention that people have been reposting and using that second picture for RP purposes. I don’t mind (in fact I am amazed by the attention it’s getting) but it would be nice if you guys would take a moment to credit me, by linking back to this blog. It’s just common courtesy. Thank you.Loading... -
I saw the io9 article about unused happy endings, and I had no idea they shot an alternate end for SP. I'm not sure which one I like better- they're both good- but I was wondering what you thought about the one that doesn't match the comics?
There is an alternate ending (preserved on the DVD) where Scott ends up with Knives. Here is the story behind it:
(1) the movie was mostly written around the time of books 3-4.
(2) The movie has its own arc.
(3) I wasn’t sure how the books were going to end.
(4) They decided it made sense to have him end up with Knives.
(5) It kinda wasn’t working. They did test screenings and the audience was split 50/50 as to which girl they wanted him to end up with.
(6) My main problem with it was that it made Knives a weaker character.
(7) Edgar wanted to redo the ending after he saw my rough notes for volume 6. He and I and screenwriter Michael Bacall went back and forth via email and rewrote the ending.
(8) I wrote the line “I’m too cool for you anyway” for Knives at the end of the movie. I wanted her to move on from him, not just give up on him.
(9) people sometimes complain about Ramona being a colder character in the movie, and this is probably partly because the movie was shot with a Knives ending in mind.
(10) But the final ending is the final ending for a reason. It’s just what works for the characters and the story.Loading... -
A Few Hot Tips For Making Better Comics
1. Get a ruler.
2. Get a triangle. A triangle is like a ruler, only it’s shaped like a triangle. It costs like a couple of dollars.
3. Draw straight lines for your panel borders. Use right angles for the corners. That’s what a ruler and triangle can do for you.
4. Measure a distance between your first two panels and then keep using the exact same distance between all your panels in that comic. Those spaces between panels are called gutters. Inconsistently sized gutters look bad and amateurish. Consistently sized gutters look better. It’s a super easy thing to make your comics look way cleaner and more professional. After you try it a few times you don’t have to measure anymore but you DO have to measure at first. So try it!!
EDIT TO ADD: straight lines and consistent gutters is like the comics layout equivalent of figure drawing / anatomy — get the basics down solid before you start getting crazy and stylized. Log some hours doing the most straightforward approach before you decide you’re a genius and can do whatever the hell you want.

At a workshop not too many years ago a newer writer began to condemn a best selling novel, pointing out all its flaws and jagged edges. I listened for a long time, nodding.
“All those things are true,” I said. And gave him the C.C. Finlay quote. “But until you learn what the good parts were that excited the reader, you’re always going to be bitterly upset about what is wrong with that bestseller. Learn to spot what worked in that book, and you’ll be able to move forward. And you’ll be a lot less upset all the time as well.”
”— Tobias Buckell on “The fate of today’s book bloggers”
The C.C. Finlay quote: “A novel doesn’t excite readers because you took all the bad stuff out of it, it excites them because of all the good stuff that’s in it, regardless of the bad.”

Hello Mr. O'Malley! I recently bought a new natural hair brush (I don't have its brand name sadly) and I found that it's very thick and not a choice brush for inking comics/other art. Do you know of any good names or lines to recommend (and whether they're better to use than synthetic-bristled brushes)? Thanks! :3
I’ve never had good luck with synthetic brushes, and I learned on cheap brushes, but you really have to switch to a pure kolinsky sable brush as soon as possible if you want to get serious about brushes. There’s just no comparison IMO. I started using one partway through Scott Pilgrim volume 2 and you can see the difference. People always ask if I switched to digital inks. It’s just that much cleaner.
These days I use the Rosemary & Co Series 33 Kolinsky Sable.
http://www.rosemaryandco.com/watercolour-brushes/pure-kolinsky-sable/pure-kolinsky-pointedI used size 3 for the last few Scott Pilgrim books and I am hoping to use a size 1 for Seconds (but I haven’t started inking it yet).
The ‘classic’ brush that cartoonists use is a Windsor & Newton Series 7, size 1 — this is what Jeff Smith (of BONE) always talked about using and what I went for when I was starting out.
http://www.winsornewton.com/products.aspx?PageID=325I had trouble with a size 1 so I ended up using a size 2 for much of Scott Pilgrim. I switched to the Rosemary & Co brushes around volume 5.
What is the difference?
The problem with the Series 7 for me was that they were often damaged or unusable. I don’t know if it’s the shipping or the storage or the manufacturing or what, but maybe 1 in 5 brushes was actually any good, and when they’re $20-30 each, that’s a lot of money to throw away to find one good brush.
The Rosemary & Co brushes are cheaper, but just as good if not better, and I’m not sure I’ve ever had a dud brush from them. They ship from England and I buy 5 at a time to make sure I get good ones (I was paranoid after years of Series 7 purchases). I already probably have enough good ones to last me a decade!
Anything below a pure kolinsky sable brush is going to have the problems I outlined above (ie bad quality brushes) but amplified x10 or more. A good brush is an investment and if you’re moderately careful with it it can last you years.
As for ink, I use Koh-i-Noor black drawing ink. It’s just my favorite. It flows really well. It has a yellow label and here’s the amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/Kohinoor-Drawing-Ink-9065-d-Black/dp/B000YQERWW/
Rosemary & Co brush + Koh-i-noor ink has gotten me through a lot of pages of comics!

Austin, I'm curious about your ongoing meditation experiences. Since I like to think of myself as "like you" in terms of age, experience, world outlook, etc., it's refreshing to find someone who isn't..."crunchy" talking about their experiences with meditation and its positive effects. It's been hard for me. (Forgive me for my previous question, which just said "Austin,")

Yeah! Meditation! As you can see, it’s now my #1 daily priority. My wife can tell you at the end of the day with pretty deadly accuracy whether or not I meditated.
When I started out I was totally the same way—I wanted to meditate, but I did not want any “crunchy.” No new-agey crap or whatever.
So I just sat down at the top of my stairs, set a timer for 10 minutes, and closed my eyes. Seriously. That’s it. That’s still all I do, months later! And I just try to breath deeply, let my mind go, let thoughts come and go, try to let my whole body relax.
Sometimes I have really vivid images come to me. Sometimes great ideas come to me. Sometimes nothing happens at all.
What it’s taught me is how fucking hard it is to do something every single day. Holy crap, it’s hard. Think of it this way: if you can’t train yourself to sit on your ass for 10 minutes and do nothing once a day, how the hell are you going to do anything else that requires discipline?
Anyways, I really recommend it. Just sit somewhere and set a timer and try to lose yourself and don’t look at your phone or your laptop. It’s so stupidly simple, but so great.
