          Full Stack Marketing

A few days ago, Marcelo Calbucci, had a great post in Geekwire about the lack of great marketing minds in startups.

For whatever reason marketing seems to be a second rate citizen in startup land. Most startups are sucking up as many engineers as possible, but delaying marketing help until after a significant funding round.

            Craigslist Shut Me Down :(

            image

Last week I receieved a cease and desist from the attorneys of Craigslist.  I can’t say I’m suprised, I knew there was a good chance of that happening.

Some might expect a bitter attitude on my part, but to be honest I wasn’t really that distressed about the situation. I learned a ton in the couple of months that CL Alerts was active.  I went from 0-800 users in under 3 months with no marketing budget.

I successfully managed the development through Odesk with a great developer I found and I managed to do it for under $500.

I am thankful for two services in particular, Odesk and Mailgun. Without them I would not have been able to build the solution to the problem that I knew many Craigslist users have.

So what’s next? My day job is in the automotive culture scene where I am the project manager of Formula Drift’s webcast product called DRIFTStream.

While working with sponsors and and our media partners I started to realize that there was a gap in connecting brands with these smaller niche media sites.

Soon… I will be launching RedlineAds, The Automotive Culture Ad Network.  Once again this opportunity would not have been possible even a couple of years ago but with the help cloud based platforms I can develop a vertical ad network.

My inspiration came from The Deck Network.  A vertical ad network in the design niche that only allows certain publishers in it’s network and screen’s advertisers. The focus on the end user’s expierence by allowing only one ad per page and not a very big one at that.

Remember “It’s fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” - Bill Gates

                  Looking to acquire a domain?

I just tweeted about this, but I wanted to elaborate a bit on the “why”. A few weeks ago, I hired Rob Sequin to broker the purchase of a domain from an existing owner. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make it work because the owner was unresponsive, and so I’ve moved on to my second choice. But I enjoyed working with Rob and wanted to recommend him to others. My favorite part about Rob’s service is the way he structures his pricing. It ensures that his and his client’s interests are aligned, which takes the stress out of relationship. Here’s Rob’s description from his website:

There are no fees due unless I can purchase the target domain name for you. My commission is HALF the difference between the actual purchase price and the maximum purchase price agreed to in the contract. For example, if the client wants to pay no more than $5000 for a target domain and I can broker a deal to buy it for $2000, then the client pays the $2000 actual purchase price plus HALF the difference of the $3000 spread. In this scenario, the client agreed to pay a maximum of $5000 but only has to pay $3500 ($2000 purchase price plus 50% of $3000 difference which is $1500).

One of the interesting things about Internet startups is the potential to invent new ways of doing business where everyone’s interests are aligned. It’s nice to see similarly thoughtful approaches in our analog relationships as well. Here’s the full rundown on Rob’s website. If you’re looking to acquire a domain, perhaps he may be able to help you.
