Man, you know, I never thought about how direct the parallels were between Aelita and Yumi before. Though to be fair…I’ve had a few.
Still though, I think my theory is a good one. Yumi is pretty active in the action part of her life and really passive in the personal part. She takes down Krabes, and fucks up Hornets like nobody’s business when the show is nice enough to make her effective. But then, when it comes to her love life she waits for Ulrich to do everything. She doesn’t ask him anything or listen to explanations of what’s going on, but jumps to conclusions and gives him the passive-aggressive silent treatment when she’s mad.
Then you have Aelita. She runs and hides from the monsters on Lyoko, waits until it’s safe before proceeding even after she gets a way to fight. BUT. She deals her relationship with Jeremie pretty directly, letting him know exactly what’s wrong even when she runs off upset. It’s Jeremie’s fault if he doesn’t get what’s up, because she fucking tells him exactly why she’s mad. Jeremie’s pretty much her bitch, is what I’m saying.
And then, there’s the parallels between Ulrich and William. Ulrich is quiet and shy and often doesn’t let Yumi know how he feels. He mopes and doesn’t tell her why. He has problems articulating his feelings and is deeply afraid of rejection. BUT he also cares deeply about Yumi as a person. He takes the time to understand her, her desires, and her needs.
William, however, pays attention to her (on a shallow surface layer but still). He does little romantic gestures, and tries to woo her, and makes his feelings for her clear and public. But he doesn’t care about her as a person. He cares about her as part of a bad boy rebel fantasy he’s constructed around her. He gives her roses on the basis that “all the other girls like roses.” He tries to kiss her when she really doesn’t want to. Because in his mind, she’s as crazy about him as he is of her. Emphasis on “crazy.” As in, not paying attention to the reality of the situation.
That’s pretty fucking good for a kid’s TV show. It’s not like. Art house cinema kind of story construction. But for the 11-16 crowd or whatever it was pretty good.

I didn’t just reblog this because 1. I wanted the whole thing to be there and 2. I wanted to add the GIFS :D
