I was at my grandparents’ house and my grandma was like, Becca I have a message for you. It’s from one of your old teachers. Mr. Calvert said he wanted to congratulate you on how well you are doing in school and how well you are doing with your running and he wanted to tell you that he knows that because he has been keeping track of your running and your grades. He also wanted me to tell you that he only does that with the best students and athletes that come through Edgewood and that you are one of the best students he ever had.
This is why I love where I’m from. I get notes and letters every once in a while from my teachers who still keep track of me and it means so much that I have a community that cares about me and supports me.
I know it’s small town mentality, but even though I represent Fort Wayne and IPFW now every time I run I still run for this community and all of the people that have been supporting me since the beginning. I rely on so much of what my old coaches and teachers have taught me. That is one thing that I have learned from running in college: having so many people that genuinely care about you is a rare and beautiful thing.
