Hi Eric - so I think a lot of the people that come to your site see your videos, see how successful you are at such a young age and probably hope to follow in your footsteps. Anything you can do to give advice, how to really get noticed and start making comedy videos on the level and with the kind of people that you do would be super helpful. Is there more to share than simply getting involved at UCB?

I always bring up UCB because it’s an integral part of my story.
The way I got noticed and got to where I am, was by doing consistant work in a community of other comedians. We all learned from each other. All my friends from UCB live and breathe comedy. We work hard. If we’re not on stage performing, we’re practicing; we’re sitting around at a bar talking about what we think is funny. This is what you have to do.
After a few years at UCB, I was lucky enough to get hired to write for a TV show, but I would have never had that opportunity if it hadn’t been for the friends I made at UCB. It’s much easier for somebody to take a chance on you if they already know you.
At each job, with each project you work on, each thing you do, you learn. You get better. The better you get, the more people want to work with you.
I got hired at “Funny or Die,” because they liked what I did at “Human Giant.” FOD gave me the opportunity to direct the sketches I wrote and I just sort of dove in head first. Just like at UCB, it took time for me to develop my style - to find my voice. If you look at the videos I was making two years ago and the videos I’m making now, there is a huge difference. The better my videos get, the more actors want to work with me. The better the actors get, the better the videos get, and so on and so on…
As for advice? Just keep working. Keep trying to make your videos better and better. If you look back at the work you were doing six months ago and you’re satisfied with it, you’re not working hard enough to improve.
But I’m always going to recommend the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater to anyone that wants to work in comedy. You’ll find so many hard working comedians there, it really forces you to up your game.
There’s a reason I have the UCB logo tattooed on my arm!
