Updated Terms of Service Based on Your Feedback
Earlier this week, we introduced a set of updates to our privacy policy and terms of service to help our users better understand our service. In the days since, it became clear that we failed to fulfill what I consider one of our most important responsibilities – to communicate our intentions clearly. I am sorry for that, and I am focused on making it right.
The concerns we heard about from you the most focused on advertising, and what our changes might mean for you and your photos. There was confusion and real concern about what our possible advertising products could look like and how they would work.
Because of the feedback we have heard from you, we are reverting this advertising section to the original version that has been in effect since we launched the service in October 2010. You can see the updated terms here.
Going forward, rather than obtain permission from you to introduce possible advertising products we have not yet developed, we are going to take the time to complete our plans, and then come back to our users and explain how we would like for our advertising business to work.
You also had deep concerns about whether under our new terms, Instagram had any plans to sell your content. I want to be really clear: Instagram has no intention of selling your photos, and we never did. We don’t own your photos – you do.
Finally, there was also confusion about how widely shared and distributed your photos are through our service. The distribution of your content and photos is governed by our privacy policy, and always has been. We have made a small change to our terms to make that as clear as possible.
You can view the current terms and privacy policy, as well as review the updated terms and privacy policy that will take effect on January 19, 2013.
I’m proud that Instagram has a community that feels so strongly about a product we all love. I’m even more proud that you feel empowered to be vocal and approach us with constructive feedback to help us build a better product. Thank you for your feedback, and I look forward to all that Instagram has to bring in the New Year.
Thank you,
Kevin Systrom co-founder, Instagram

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
Children laid in their beds knowing St. Nick was near
They were bundles of joy filled with Christmas cheer
The internet was quiet, hardly a soul searched for porn

They went to sleep early, awaiting Christmas morn

Like a large, bearded burrito, I laid wrapped in my bed
While visions of corgis danced in my head
But then on my roof, I heard a strange sound
Like a bunch of hoof-steps and then a great pound
I rose from my sleep and put on some pants
I missed one of the leg-holes and did an awkward dance
I heard a loud rustling and thought it was looters
With my bat’leth in hand I patrolled for intruders
I saw a dark figure who held a large sack
I sneaked in behind and planned my attack
I swung and I punched with all of my might
But this dastardly fiend hardly put up a fight
I jabbed with my blade, he was pinned to the wall
Then I realized he was no intruder at all
This startling discovery gave me great pause
For I had just pummeled dear old Santa Claus
I surveyed his wounds, he was out like a light
There was no way he could finish his job on this night
I couldn’t ruin Christmas for all the girls and boys
This was my fault, so I would deliver their toys.I got to the roof and saw Santa’s sleigh
The reindeer were waiting to get underway
I hopped aboard and then grabbed the reins
I suddenly realized I had forgotten their names
Now Steve! Now Dave! Now Lenny and John!
On Pete! On Phil! On Darryl and Ron!The sleigh did not move, and they gave me a scoff
I googled their names, I was WAY offNow Dasher!

Now Dancer!

Now Prancer and Vixen!

On Comet!

On Cupid!

On Donner and Blitzen!

The eight magic reindeer took off in a rush
I hurried them on as I shouted, “Mush! Mush!”
We flew ‘cross the moon and jingled our bells
We flew past the ocean and its midnight swells
I slipped down chimneys and delivered the toys
I ate all the cookies left by good girls and boys

Christmas was saved, and I let out a sigh
If the children had known, they surely would cry
So yes, I beat up Santa, but he is doing just fine
He’ll be back to normal in the nick of time
The elves picked him up and treated his wounds
He’s doing very well and will recover quite soon
I said a jolly, “Ho ho ho!” when I heard he was alright
And I shouted from on high…“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!”

Facebook adds drag-and-drop photos, trials simplified Timeline and delivers new privacy controls

Anyone who’s returned from an event with a virtual armful of photos may have been frustrated with Facebook’s upload interface, which until now has involved a less-than-intuitive file browser. The company is quietly solving that problem: an update pushing out to individual users lets them drag-and-drop photos into a new post, like we’ve seen on other social networks, and to a newly streamlined Messages format that’s rolling out at the same time. A much smaller circle is seeing a second update. Facebook has confirmed to _ABC News_ that it’s conducting limited trials of an updated Timeline that moves the news feed to a single column, replaces the thumbnail navigation with simpler-looking tabs and makes all profile page information available through scrolling. A spokesperson wouldn’t say if or when the new Timeline would reach the wider public, but history points to “when” being more likely. They did however mention that the new privacy shortcuts, activity log and untagging tool would be going live for all users starting tonight, and we’ve already seen them pop up on some of our accounts.

Google updates Santa tracking algorithm, reopens North Pole privacy debate

Old Saint Nick may be full of mystery and magic most of the year, but as soon as December 24th rolls around, all eyes are on the jolly fat man, especially in this era of always-on social media. Sure, it’s not the first to track Santa, but Google’s been in on the sled following game since 2004. Naturally, the company has refined its approach a bit over the years, and for 2012, Google’s offering up a new algorithm to track Mr. Kringle and his eight tiny reindeer’s route. The site counting down to the start of the Google Earth tracking is now live and you can also get in on the fun via a new Chrome Extension. As to whether you’ve been naughty or nice, you’ll just have to consult the traditional social media channels.

Google sells Motorola Home cable and internet box business to Arris for $2.35 billion

Ever since Google announced it would acquire Motorola Mobility last year there have been questions about what it would do with the company’s large internet and TV set-top box business, and now that question has been answered: it’s selling Motorola Home to Arris for $2.35 billion in cash and stock. Another maker of cable boxes and modems, Arris says the acquisition will both increase its product offering, and increase its patent portfolio thanks to a license to “a wide array” of Motorola Mobility patents. The transaction has been approved by the boards of both companies, and they expect the deal to close in Q2 2013.
The potential of slipping Android / Google TV into the cable box business through the back door was a tantalizing, but unfortunately probably not a dream shared by the operators that are Motorola’s customers. Naturally, Google will be hanging onto the mobile device business and related patent library that spurred the $12.5 billion acquisition in the first place. We’ll be hopping on a conference call to find out any more details in a moment, check out the press release after the break. Now, who holds the rights to that Motorola home automation tablet?
