Comic Chameleon is the ultimate iOS app for Webcomics

          image

May 10, 2013 - Comic Chameleon, the ultimate mobile webcomics app, is now available for download in the iOS Apple Store, for the iPhone and iPod Touch!  Comic Chameleon is the premier platform for webcomics fans to enjoy all their favorite titles on the go, and for webcomic artists to distribute their work to the thus-far untapped and massive iOS market.

Only Comic Chameleon lets you tap to navigate every single webcomic strip or page from panel to panel, with each tap gliding to the next panel cleanly cropped and zoomed for a perfect reading experience. Only Comic Chameleon gives you full archives, doesn’t charge you issue by issue, and isn’t just an RSS reader that scrapes the last 5 updates. And only Comic Chameleon does this all with the full support of all the artists we publish.

Watch the video tour of the app in action!

          The Artists

The 25 webcomics you can currently read on Comic Chameleon are among the most amazing and beloved comics on the internet, created by the most outrageously talented independent artists around.  This list includes wildly popular titles such as XKCD by Randall Munroe, Dinosaur Comics by Ryan North, Questionable Content by Jeph Jacques, and Girls with Slingshots by Danielle Corsetto.  Our goal is to support every one of these creative individuals in their efforts to keep bringing you their comics for free.  That’s why we have a great relationship with each one of our artists, we’re paying them to let us publish their work, and we don’t do anything without their permission.

We’re very proud of our starting lineup of comics, but rest assured they won’t be the only ones you’ll be seeing in the app.  Soon we’ll be talking to more and more artists about publishing their comics too, and ultimately the platform will be opened up so that all webcomics can join the party.

          The Team

Comic Chameleon was designed by Bernie Hou, whose experience as the creator of the webcomic Alien Loves Predator ensures that all artists publishing through the app are treated and compensated fairly.  The app itself was built by Jason Gresh, a programmer and systems expert with over 20 years of experience.

With the success of the iOS App Store launch, we have already begun to explore all possibilities for bringing this premier service to other mobile platforms, beginning with Android.

I sometimes wonder if CNN.com is sufficiently self-aware to realize that running a blaring BREAKING NEW headline about somebody asking the media for privacy is a bit of a dick move. I mean, look, if you’re the media, you cover stuff. You’re under no obligation to honor a request for privacy, other than a general desire to do the decent thing.

A victim’s request for privacy is not national news. Making it national news is exactly what the victim’s family was asking you not to do.

Participants rated their sexual orientation on a 10-point scale, ranging from gay to straight. Then they took a computer-administered test designed to measure their implicit sexual orientation. In the test, the participants were shown images and words indicative of hetero- and homosexuality (pictures of same-sex and straight couples, words like “homosexual” and “gay”) and were asked to sort them into the appropriate category, gay or straight, as quickly as possible. The computer measured their reaction times.

The twist was that before each word and image appeared, the word “me” or “other” was flashed on the screen for 35 milliseconds — long enough for participants to subliminally process the word but short enough that they could not consciously see it. The theory here, known as semantic association, is that when “me” precedes words or images that reflect your sexual orientation (for example, heterosexual images for a straight person), you will sort these images into the correct category faster than when “me” precedes words or images that are incongruent with your sexual orientation (for example, homosexual images for a straight person). This technique, adapted from similar tests used to assess attitudes like subconscious racial bias, reliably distinguishes between self-identified straight individuals and those who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual.

Using this methodology we identified a subgroup of participants who, despite self-identifying as highly straight, indicated some level of same-sex attraction (that is, they associated “me” with gay-related words and pictures faster than they associated “me” with straight-related words and pictures). Over 20 percent of self-described highly straight individuals showed this discrepancy.

Notably, these “discrepant” individuals were also significantly more likely than other participants to favor anti-gay policies; to be willing to assign significantly harsher punishments to perpetrators of petty crimes if they were presumed to be homosexual; and to express greater implicit hostility toward gay subjects (also measured with the help of subliminal priming). Thus our research suggests that some who oppose homosexuality do tacitly harbor same-sex attraction.

New study indicates homophobia is often a result of repressed homosexual feelings, validating what Freud posited in his concept of “reaction formation,” in which we lash out against others’ expressions of what we loathe in ourselves.

The above is via explore-blog, and it’s a long and fancy way of saying that (at least according to this study) homophobia is often associated with repressed homosexual feelings. This work will be appearing in the next issue of Journal of Stuff Everyone Knows But Couldn’t Quite Prove Until Now.
