Mets honor Beastie Boys with at-bat music

    winstonwolfe:

The Beastie Boys are big Mets fans, and vice versa. So when clubhouse music gurus Justin Turner and Scott Hairston suggested that the Mets honor late band member Adam “MCA” Yauch with their walk-up music Friday night, the whole team jumped on board. Here’s what they chose:

    Ruben Tejada: “Intergalactic”
Daniel Murphy: “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”
    David Wright: “Brass Monkey”
    Lucas Duda: “The New Style”
    Scott Hairston: “Root Down”
Ike Davis: “Fight For Your Right (To Party)”
    Andres Torres: “So What’cha Want”
    Josh Thole: “Make Some Noise”
    Dillon Gee: “Body Movin’”

    Mom’s Gold Star

I get the feeling Alysha didn’t just post this update to be funny, but to sincerely educate her fellow parent friends on how to manipulate their children into being quiet. She genuinely wants to share her genius with others, and she even conservatively estimates the 85% success rate as if to say, “Don’t come knocking on my door if this method doesn’t work; I’m just trying to help you guys avoid your children for as long as humanly possible with an old family recipe.” It kind of makes me wonder what other awesome tricks she has up her sleeve. I bet her friends are grateful.

Congratulations on winning this week’s Gold Star, Alysha! Thanks for taking the time to let everyone know that getting their kids to settle down isn’t always as hard as it seems. Sometimes all it takes is being in charge of the remote control.

The technical term for this is “great news.”

    leitch:

I’m proud to report that The Projector lives! Like the famed porpoise rose from the fabled ashes, Mr. Tim Grierson and I are going to be writing about film together again. Starting next week, our essays and reviews will run (roughly) daily on Gawker and Deadspin. We’ll be doing about 4-5 pieces a week; we’re looking for our contributions to be around 50 percent reviews and 50 percent essays, or “Denouements,” as we called them at The Projector. We’re scaling back what we did at The Projector because that was an autonomous full-functioning blog (as opposed to this, which will be a small feature on an established site) and because no matter how hard we tried, we just couldn’t successfully pretend we cared about box office returns or the “Twilight” trailer.

We’ll be posting the reviews/essays on Deadspin and cross-posting them to Gawker, because: a) I’m more comfortable using Deadspin’s interface; B) Craggs is an easier editor to get on the phone than Daulerio; and C) Daulerio’s gonna have other film coverage on Gawker and we don’t want people thinking we’re all there is. We’re very excited about this and do hope people enjoy it. And follow @griersonleitch on Twitter to know everything that’s going on. See you next week.

It is that time of the year again: Tonight, as we do every year the night before the Academy Award nominations come out (though this year we were delayed a week because Tim was at Sundance),  Grierson and I will spend four-plus hours on the phone for our annual Dorkfest, the announcement of our top 10 movie from the previous year.

This is a special year, because this is the 20th Dorkfest, though it’s only been called Dorkfest for about seven. (Daulerio came up with the name, not surprisingly.) We always wait this long because growing up in Mattoon, in the early ’90s, we needed the extra month to wait for the best reviewed movies to come to Central Illinois. Because we worked together on the late, lamented The Projector this year, I have a better idea of what Tim’s list is gonna look like this time.

At 7 p.m. ET time tonight, Dorkfest XX begins. Our top 10s are tightly guarded secrets revealed sometime around midnight. It is among the nerdiest things I do, and definitely among my favorites.

By the way, if you enjoyed The Projector, stay tuned for some impending news on a new place for Grierson and me to peddle our movie reviewing wares. And follow @griersonleitch on Twitter for updates.
