This is silly, but I’d just like to take a moment to highlight these two bits of animation, because they’re some of my favorites in the film (that second is actually my top favorite).

If you have a Mac, try to click and drag these bits of animation from the beginning of the gif, drag them to your desktop, open them up in “Preview”, and look at each frame.

Whether or not you’re an animation geek, you can’t deny that the animators did an absolutely marvelous job breathing life into this character, and I’m not saying this just because I’m a fan of the Once-ler. Take note of the subtle changes in the eyes and eyebrows; how they play with mouth shapes; how loquacious his hands are (hands act as a second mouth and a second set of eyes when their actions are effectively utilized, and that’s definitely the case here); the pacing/timing; the squash and stretch; etc….

In this scene, the animators were dealing with a conflicted character. He knows what he’s done is wrong, yet he’s still on the defensive line. The sarcasm and frustration show through beautifully, and this, mixed with inner conflict, make for an interesting set of emotions that is so wonderfully conveyed here. They really played with the shapes in the face, making the whole thing very appealing to watch. It’s intriguing from an aesthetic standpoint, yet it also complements what’s happening story-wise. I could go on and on and on about this….

Sorry, but I’ve just wanted to go on a mini geek fest about this, because I absolutely love the animation in this whole sequence. When I get the Blu-ray/DVD I’m gonna frame-by-frame the crap out of this movie, because the work that the artists put into this thing is amazing and it shows.

I stole these gifs from Bitter’s blog, by the way, because I knew I’d be able to find them quickly there. Heh.
