Still Life After the Apocalypse
You are climbing off your roof, down the ladder
You are adjusting your goals
You are a specific human being with a general hunger
You are stepping in puddles of shit and rain
You had imagined this differently, a different landscape
Something with ceiling fans and gas stations
Something with more places to hide
A diner with too-hot booths made of cracked leather
Where a dusty man, too old, wants to buy you a cup of coffee
You nod because here is someone
You were waiting for someone
You were carving words into your placemat with a dry pen
Instead there is this
Gravity has relaxed and
Slowly, slowly, everything is turning into everything else
You maintain a feeling of slight inebriation
The ringing in your ears echoes off the horizon
The geometry of this place is beginning to decay
You were waiting for something
You feel like you should be carrying something, a passport or some currency
You used to explain yourself in objects
You were waiting for someone whose mind reminded you of yours
You will find yourself with your face resting against the window
It is cold, and your head is pounding from the gray glow outside
Your eyes will focus on the condensation on the glass
This will be an accurate representation of how you spent your time:
So fresh, so filthy, digging blindly underground toward the sky

I’ve been trying to teach myself to watercolor. Here are some images I’ve been working on for the Women’s Resource Center.

“Bandage any part of your body.
If people ask about it, make a story
And tell.
If people do not ask about it, draw
Their attention to it and tell.
If people forget about it, remind
Them of it and keep telling.
Do not talk about anything else.”— Yoko Ono -
