        “The Escape Pod”

It’s a shame it had to be this way.

As Mozzy the Brown Dog and Deuce the Jack Russell watch their master’s ship explode into a thousand pieces from the safety of the escape pod, they wonder to themselves… are we to blame

        Are we bad dogs?

We tried to wake up our master, we yipped and we yapped, and it’s not our fault that they didn’t understand it meant we were warning them about the fuel leak.   It was strongly implied.

        We really did our part.

To be honest, I mean, Master was a good owner… but maybe if they would have played with us more, perhaps we wouldn’t have been so tempted to chew through the fuel line.  This was totally preventable.

Even still… it’s bittersweet to have it end this way.  To not have a human to call your own is so excruciatingly embarrassing; it’s no way for a dog to live.  But as the explosion of their former home and the tiny bits and pieces of their Master fades away into they darkness of space, they realize… we’re free

And that’s what Master would have wanted, if they weren’t exploded.

        I don’t know… maybe we are bad dogs :-/

Mozzy, ashamed, looks anxiously for a table to hide under as he waits for a scolding that will never come.

And Deuce, for lack of knowing what else to do and feeling equal parts  optimism and fear for the future, simply wags his tail.

“Upon an Island Outside the Streams of Time”

Sick of being a slave to time’s forward motion
And stuck in its currents like an overflowing ocean
Eli Hampton built his own island, away from the grid of time
As the idea of living a timeless life seemed truly sublime.

From his island home, he sees time tangle and weave
The streams of parallel realities twisting in directions hard to conceive
And time flows with the ever present companions of rebirth and death,
Allowing Eli to watch endless generations live and take their last breath.

Happy to be free, Eli won’t hunger or age
He’ll lean against his palm tree and laugh at those in time’s cage
Experiencing nothing, but never having to live and/or die
Eli just gets to sit on his island, and watch the time drift right on by.

                      The Making Of: @DannyHess Surfboards

The Making Of… Know any other Instagrammers doing something unique with their hands? Send us a note through Tumblr.

At the very west end of San Francisco, where the city meets the Pacific Ocean, Danny Hess (@dannyhess) makes custom surfboards, skateboards, and handplanes. Like the ancient Polynesians who invented surfing, Danny’s boards are made out of wood, which is uncommon for surfboards made today.

“Salvaged and responsibly harvested wood is by far the best material for engineering a light, responsive, and durable board,” Danny says. “I build these to last. My goal has always been to build a beautiful, functional board that you never have to replace.”

You can get a peek at the process of hand-shaping a wooden surfboard on Danny’s Instagram account, @dannyhess, and be sure to check out more of Danny’s work on his website: hesssurfboards.com.
