    • Mom: Your generation thinks of these things, like pantsuits, as purely symbolic, but it was about freedom. I recently read an article describing women diplomats actually being late to important meetings because of not being able to walk fast enough in high heels. Wearing pants let us participate; aside from their silly ties, think about how much more comfortable men's work "uniforms" are.
    • Me: But, I like to wear skirts and dresses. What if I WANT to wear skirts and dresses?
    • Mom: That's fine, but what about in the freezing cold? I don't see you wearing a lot of skirts and dresses when it's freezing out. And what if you had to wear stockings, not leggings?
    • Me: God, that sounds awful! I probably wouldn't leave the house.
    • Mom: Well, I'm glad we settled that.
    • Me: We still haven't finished our discussion of feminism's unfortunate tendencies toward classism and racism.
    • Mom: Can we do that later? This feminist has to run to the grocery store, while your father is at the baseball game.
     
  3. Anger problem?
    • N: So, at this point, she [a friend] can talk about Christianity without being hostile, because she believes that, as a humanist, she can work with Christians on important social justice issues.
    • K: But, is that necessarily better? She's just tolerating it, but not engaging it or taking it seriously as a viable option or a potentially true claim.
    • Me: I think it's better, because it sounds like she has a greater peace about it, rather than having to react constantly or antagonize all Christians. It's not good for humans to be filled with rage and anger all of the time.
    • N/K/E/G: [silence...long pause...confused/incredulous looks on faces]
    • Me: Ohhhhhh, I get it--you think that's strange for me to say because I'M angry all the time, and antagonistic and bitter toward Christianity. Yeah, you make a good point.
