This instantly reminded me of Alice Walker’s short story, “The Abortion,” in which the heroine tells her fetus, “It was either you or me, kid, & I chose me.” I sought comfort from that story time and again when it came to my own unplanned pregnancy; I wanted to keep the baby, but every one of my doctors said that there was no way I could survive a pregnancy, nor would it be possible for my child to be normal & healthy because of my own health condition & all the medications I was taking. All in all, the irony was fairly brutal; despite being firmly pro-choice, I had very little “choice” when it came to my own pregnancy.
This article makes a great point, though; women don’t talk about their abortions very much, & when we don’t discuss something, that tends to make it a shameful, taboo subject. I’m not ashamed that I chose to live, though that will never mitigate the pain of loss I feel about having had to choose my own life over my child’s. Still, I absolutely refuse to let the War on Women here in the US succeed; the way that conservatives are trying to stigmatize & penalize women’s sexuality has enraged me more than any other issue in a long time…and I know that I’m by no means the only one who feels this way. Clearly those ignorant misogynists in Congress have never read Lysistrata.
