On the mainstream Philippine entertainment industry
There’s been a lot of speculation for years about a particular male star’s sexual preferences, and while it’s great tabloid fodder and so much fun to talk about with pretty much everybody (because everyone has an opinion), I also find it so, so sad that, even if he is gay (and I’m not saying that he is, because it hasn’t been proven), he can’t come out because it will ruin his career.
Granted, some formerly pa-straight artistas who have come out of the closet (like Rustom Padilla, for instance) have traipsed all the way down to the opposite side of the gender spectrum in very nice heels (he goes by BB Gandanghari now, if you haven’t heard), but just because we get a lot of parlorista badings in the Philippines doesn’t mean that all gays secretly want to be women. Some men really just like being men, and being with other men. Not all gay actors have to be actors in the style of Vice Ganda (who I love, and is fabulous, by the way). Look at Neil Patrick Harris. Can’t a gay actor play a straight dude in this country? Does it matter that he likes guys in real life, if he can kiss a girl onscreen and pull off the role convincingly? Does he have to give up his career in order to live his life the way he might want to?
I blame it on the industry. I blame it on the people who insist that their actors be in real life what they are onscreen. It’s called acting for a reason. You channel something you might not necessarily be, you become another person and portray another life, you tell a story. Let our actors act.
Let’s see who really has the chops.
