    George Tooker, Bird Watchers, 1948.

It seemed clear in the morning, so I went out, but it started to rain and I retreated.  I felt out-of-sorts all day.  By 5 PM it had started to clear, so I walked to a local shrine and climbed all the stairs for the exercise.  On the way home, I stopped at a grocery store to buy wheatgrass for the cat and something to eat, although I was admittedly not hungry at all.  I was going to get sushi but a store employee was standing in the area talking rapidly, and I could not tell if it was the usual repetitive nonsense hawkers say to encourage you to spend or if he was actually crazy, so I finally fled.  I was tired of the narrow aisles and cranky old ladies.  On the way out, I nearly collided with a forty-something Japanese man wearing a fantastically strange mustard-yellow velvet blazer and an ascot. I recall the blazer particularly because I was also wearing a mustard-yellow scarf.  In fact, I was a horrid array of primary shades, red red hair, yellow scarf, blue shirt.

The next grocery store I went to was slightly less crowded, but standing near the tofu and eggs, I experienced a terrible sense of weltzschmerz or homesickness or unheimlich-ness.  I just wanted to put my basket down and flee.  Or push a giant shopping cart slowly down the gigantic aisles of an empty Wal-Mart whilst listening to 70s soft rock.

Not too surprisingly, I ran into yellow-blazer again.  He was acting very strangely and kept walking in and out of the supermarket.  I didn’t feel like dealing with him, so I bought my pre-packaged sushi and bread and bananas and Mineola oranges and when I was finally out of the store I could fully vent my feelings of world-dismay all over my face.  I felt the beginnings of a migraine on the walk home, so I suppose that accounts for some of the angst.
