It seems like everybody went through some sort of bad phase. Like a scene phase or an emo phase or something like that. I can proudly say I’ve never been through any kind of silly phase.
Oh, wait. There was that one time where, for about 11 years, society convinced me that I was a girl and could only ever be a girl.
Yeah.
I’m really glad I got over that one.

I honestly don’t think I can ever love anything as much as I love Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst, which in a way is kind of sad.

Today at work, my supervisor asked me to change the radio station, because he felt that the music wasn't "appropriate" for a kids fun swim. I changed it to greatest hits.
The song that was on? Clumsy by Our Lady Peace. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the lyrics, the chorus goes something like this:
“I’ll be waving my hands, watching youdrown, watching you scream, quiet or loud.”
… I was crying.

I really love this blog! My favorite thing about Conor is his amazing talent with words. I think some good ones to explain would be some of his arcane/religious references. I'm thinking about the "Whore of Babylon" in "Four Winds" and some of his Buddhist references (the mandala in "Lenders in the Temple" and the famous book "Zen Mind Beginners Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki that he may be referencing in the song "Beginners Mind.") Perhaps the story about lenders being in the biblical temple.
Oh and one more thing! Talking about Laurel wreaths and trees that he references, as well as the name Laura, I know that Laurel wreaths/crowns were traditionally given to outstanding poets. This is where the term “poet laureate” comes from! Do you perhaps think this is another reason why he is so transfixed on the symbol? :P

Thanks so much! I’ll make some posts about your suggestions and have them up soon! :)
As for the “Laura/Laurel” association, I know that people can get really invested in which songs are about which girlfriends so I’m hesitant to say “this is what it is,” but my pet theory is that the name Laura might be taken from the Italian poet Petrarch, who wrote a famous sonnet sequence (Petrarchan Sonnets are named after him) about a woman named Laura, love, and fame, drawing on connections between Laura/laurel. Conor is extremely well-read (and was also an English major for a few semesters!), and since Petrarch is covered in most entry-level Literature and Classics courses, I think he would have some familiarity with Petrarch and his “Laura.” Of course, this is only my theory, and to my knowledge Conor hasn’t ever said anything about who or what Laura is. But both Laura and laurels do reappear in different songs!
