    Mars Rover Snaps Stunning Self-Portrait

NASA put together this artsy image of Mars rover Opportunity getting a glimpse of its own shadow on the rim of Endeavour Crater. The robotic geologist used its panoramic camera to take about a dozen shots using an assortment of filters between about 4:30 and 5 p.m. Mars time on March 9.

The images were transmitted back to Earth where a team of scientists assembled them into this mosaic, which was released Wednesday.

RIP Robin Gibb: One third of the Bee Gees has died. Robin Gibb, who died at 62 after a lengthy bout with colon and liver cancer, helped usher in the era of disco with his band, which was active for over four decades. The band’s work on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack ensured their place in rock history, with songs such as “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever” defining an era of pop culture. Gibb also had a lengthy solo career which ran concurrently with his Bee Gees success. Gibb is survived by his brother and fellow Bee Gee Barry; his twin Maurice died in 2003, and his younger brother Andy (who was successful as a solo artist) died in 1988. (Above: A YouTube montage of Robin, set to his solo tune “Another Lonely Night In New York.”)
