Institutional Determinants of the Rule of Law

This is an excellent essay by one of my favorite Tumblrers http://whakatikatika.tumblr.com/

He won a fat check and a trip to meet with the Hans-Adam II, the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein, who is ironically an anarchist at heart.

Read the essay. Follow the man.

Do you know of any good philosophy blogs? Or anarchists with a libertarian/philosophical bent?
    Anonymous

    Oh, do I!

Cal runs two fantastic blogs with weirdo New Zealand names:

    http://whakatikatika.tumblr.com/

    http://whakahekeheke.tumblr.com/

Dustin runs an awesome blog that focuses specifically on both philosophy and anarchism:

    http://disobey.tumblr.com/

And Ricardo runs a brilliant and highly influential blog as well:

    http://statehate.tumblr.com/

These are the cream of the crop that I’m giving you, but I follow many other very good libertarian/philosophical/anarchism blogs. So I suggest you check out my page which has many reblogs from these people, and has links to “Important things” “Important people” and slightly less important, but fun “Sexy Anti-Statists of Tumblr”.

All technology does is allow the people who want money to better express their underlying intention to be in total control of everything. That’s what technological progress is. That’s how we measure it. That’s how we know we’re making it. The more high tech technology gets the more its real value to us is discovered.

    Ourben

Quoted above is one of the most randomly strewn about set of unfounded assertions I’ve ever read.

“The more high tech technology gets…”

…Ummm, as someone who works in the Tech industry, I’d venture to say that you, sir, do not understand Technology in purpose, progress, or definition.

    Good Day.

Whoa. I just called ourben out on an appeal to authority and then he called me out for not be qualified to do so.

    Uh…

    Ah, Ourben.

My first experience with the truly amazing depth of vacuous idiocy and hypocrisy that can be found on the pages of our dear Tumblr.

That was at least a year ago, and I think he remains the only Tumblr user I’ve blocked.

I usually forget about him, but then something about him shows up on my dashboard and I feel a little sadder for all of humanity.

A Debate I Just Had on Facebook. Liberals Really Are This Astonishingly Stupid.
    • Liberal: Republicans believe in ghosts.
    • Me: I'd bet money that liberals believe in ghosts more than conservatives, because the people who are more apt to be pagans are liberals. That's a fact. Just because something sounds like a fun insult doesn't mean it's a good one. An insult should make sense. To say that Republicans believe in ghosts doesn't make any sense. If you want to say they believe in God or are religious nuts or whatever, that makes more sense, because yes, they do believe in God more than Democrats typically do, and they do tend to be more religious. A joke should have some truth to it in order to be funny.
    • Liberal: Tea party, fox news = crazy people. Republicans are on average less educated (doesn't make them less passionate) than liberals (most professors vote democrat). I am not a democrat or a republican. Republicians just happen to be the louder and dumber side in of American Politics. Democrats are dumb too, they just aren't as loud about.
    • Me: Yeah, bring up Fox news and the Tea Party, that'll refute what I said about ghosts and liberals and pagans! You, sir, are a fine debater. And Democrats aren't as loud as Republicans? Have you seen OWS? Have you seen the average Democrat/liberal protest? Democrats break things when they don't get their way. Republicans just whine and then cave. Also, I guess you missed the study that tried to tar Tea Partiers as too smart, as elitists, when the "they're just stupid" smears failed. And yes, the Tea Party--seven percent of which is made up of Democrats, and the majority of which is made up of Independents--is crazy. I mean, they want the government to stop bankrupting us, and to stop raising our debt? INSANITY!!!! Also, Republicans overwhelmingly pass civic-law and economics exams with higher scores than Democrats.Take this test [link provided]. The average score for all 2,508 Americans taking that test was 49%; college educators scored 55%. Every conservative I've had take that test has stored no lower than a 70%. That's 15 points higher than professors. Professors are bloviating sheep who ape the views of their peers. They're idiots. They can't work in the real world. You ever hear that saying, "Those who can't do, teach"? It's true in general.
    • Liberal [quoting the About section of the link with the test: "Its members, over 50,000 college students and faculty across the United States, use programs intended to supplement a collegiate education and provide access to resources that help achieve an education based primarily on works of influential men and women in the European and Christian traditions. The group supports limited government, individual liberty, personal responsibility, the rule of law, free market economy, and traditional values (specifically, those of the Judeo-Christian tradition)." Definitely an impartial test given out by these guys.
    • Me: ‎"I don't know the answers to the questions on that test, so that test is biased." Wow. Just wow.
    • Liberal: Your an idiot.
    • Me: You're*. Just pointing it out. I know, it's a typo, I know, I know. Or maybe English is just a biased language.
    • Liberal: [Again the liberal repeats the About section from the site.]
    • Me: It asks questions, dude! How is that biased? If you don't know the answers, you don't know the answers. If you do know, then you answer correctly. Obviously you don't want to take the test because of the intimidating questions. Every American should get a high score on that test, not just conservatives. It asks American questions, questions on the Constitution. There is no such thing as a biased test. How is this a biased question: "Which of the following are the unalienable rights referred to in the Declaration of Independence?" That's the first question. Oh wow, oh no, so biased and hard to answer! And it's multiple-choice: (a) life, liberty, and property; (b) honor, liberty, and peace [etc., through (c), (d), and (e)]. THE BIAS, IT'S TOO MUCH! It's asking about the Declaration of Independence! AGH! Come on, Mikey, you can do it. Don't use the Google. Do it on your own. Come on, Mikey, I believe in you. If you get it wrong, that's okay, we can move on to the next question: "In 1933 Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed a series of government programs that became known as": (a) the Great Society; (b) the Square Deal; (c) the New Deal; (d) the New Frontier; (e) supply-side economics. ZOMG! What horrible BIAS!!!!!!!11!! Man, do they let you pull that crap in your college? When you take a history test, do you say, "I don't know the answers to this test because it's biased. I refuse to take it"? Or in bio tests, when it asks you to define a microbe, do you write down, "I don't know, and I won't stand for such a biased question"? Want to see some BLATANT bias? Check out question #3: "What are the three branches of government?" (a) executive, legislative, judicial; (b) executive, legislative, military [etc., through (c), (d), and (e)]
    • Liberal: Clearly talking is your strong point, not listening. So I am going to walk away. Your going to assume its because your right. I'm going to say its because debates require two parties. Clearly your not interested in learning, and discussing, but only in telling me I am wrong. Again, just because your voice is louder doesn't make your point more valid.
    • Me: Well, let's see, I addressed everything you said, and you believe difficulty in a test is an indication of bias. And you're a liberal [he previously said he was only liberal socially, but conservative fiscally]. Know how I know? Because of your womanly desire that I "listen." What makes my point more valid is that it's correct. But even without that, I'm at least willing to defend my point. You REFUSE to tell me how a question can be a biased question. Either you know the answer to a question or you don't. Man up, you coward, and take the test.

Medics, not cops, to blame for death of Kelly Thomas, defense says

The lawyer for one of the Fullerton policemen charged in the beating of a mentally ill homeless man suggested Tuesday that it was medical professionals –- not police officers -– who are to blame for the death of Kelly Thomas.

An Open Letter to my Ex-Boyfriend

“Instead of picking the petals off a daisy and saying, ‘he loves me, he loves me not,’ I pick the petals and say, ‘he loves liberty, he loves liberty not’ and if he does not love liberty, I find him hard to love.”

    and

“Then I punched you in the face. After that things just sort of fizzled out I guess.”

    so relevant right now.
