Last.fm Tumblr Weekly Top Artists

Update: On June 10th, 2011, Tumblr announced a new version of their site that removed the ability to import RSS feeds unless you were previously using that feature. Since this Last.fm Weekly Top Artists feed was dependent on that feature, I’m afraid it’s no longer available. If you want to import your Last.fm top artists, please contact Tumblr and ask them to reactivate the RSS import option.

If you’d like to highlight your music interests from Last.fm on your Tumblr page but don’t want to inundate friends with posts for each track, check out this simple tool I made called Last.fm Tumblr. Instead of generating a post for every individual track you listen to, this feed updates once a week with a list of your top 5 artists from the prior week. Less noise, same effect. See my post from last Sunday for an example of how the list will appear on Tumblr.
To add the feed to your Tumblr:

The feed will automatically update each week on Sunday unless you don’t listen to any music through Last.fm that week, in which case nothing will appear. Let me know if you run into any problems or have any suggestions to improve the feed.
NOTE: If you run the Pipe and it returns an error message saying there are no results to display, that usually means you didn’t listen to 5 or more bands last week through Last.fm. You can confirm that by visiting the following link, but replace “joelaz” in the URL with your own Last.fm user name…

If you don’t see 5 or more bands listed, listen to more bands this week and try to run the pipe again next week. If you still get an error message, try again in a few hours. Yahoo Pipes can be a bit slow and wonky at times.

1.) What is your name and where in the WWW (Whole Wide World) do you live?
Elio: My name is Elio Martínez and I live in Madrid, Spain.
2.) What do you do for a living, what pays the bills? And what is the thing you do when you are not doing the thing that pays the bills?
Elio: I work for two companies related to the mass media (as CEO at Masaranjuez.com) and the weedings business (as Chief Marketing Officer at Bodasenaranjuez.com).
3.) How much of what you do, personally or professionally, gets done at the work space featured?
Elio: Professionally about the 70% of my work is done here, at this desk. Personally I do things like play video games, blog for NBAmaniacs.com, or edit my photos, but I also like to go outdoor to see friends, ride my bike, play soccer, and jog.
4.) Typically, what time of the day do you normally find yourself at this desk, and for how long? Night owl, early bird?
Elio: I’m basically here beginning at 8am everyday. Some days I spend the entire day at the desk, until between 6 and 8pm. Other days I leave early to go to another offices for meetings and other work-related tasks.
5.) How much of what gets done at your desk is for work, how much is it to scratch your own creative itch?
Elio: About 70% work - 30% creative life. I love to make and process photos, listen to music and write blog posts. Those activities can be done here, but I do them at other spots, like my sofa or at the park, as well.
6.) What are the essentials that can be found on your desk more times than not? How about those items just out of reach or out of sight? If it’s not on top of your desk what are the things you most often grab out of a top draw or cabinet?
Elio: Usually my computer, the iPhone, the iPad, pens, and a Moleskine or Muji notebook. Out of sight are a lot of papers that I only put on the desk when is strictly necessary.
7.) What beverage/food/snack can one usually find at your desk, and why?
Elio: Only water because I dont want to be addicted to caffeine filled drinks like coffee or coke.
8.) Do you have any reasoning or anecdotes that lend some insight into why your desk is setup the way it is, or the thinking behind certain item(s)? How about the things around your desks? Decoration, wall art, figurines, statues, etc? Any particular reason behind those?
Elio: If you see the photos you will catch some things: I like video games, Apple, the NBA and movies. Since my childhood I have bought and collected items related to those hobbies, so the result is the personal space you see in the pictures, that couldn’t be comprised of anything that didn’t include items related to those things. :)
9.) How much of what you do, or aspire to do, influences your desk setup, tangibly and intangibly.
Elio: Simplicity and happiness.
10.) Are you a Mac or are you a PC? What machine(s) are setup and used at your desk? If you are a little bit of both tell us why. How about any other tech gear that can be found at your desk or in your home?
Elio: I’m a Mac. I have a 27” iMac with a 2.66Ghz Intel i5 processor, 8GB of Ram, and a 1TB HD. I also have an iPad, and a MacBook that is not in the photos because I use it only for work in other offices.
11.) What’s the one piece of gear you could not live without?
Elio: Its difficult to say…but I couldn’t live without the iPhone or iMac!
12.) What piece of gear cannot be found on your desk, but you wish it could be?
Elio: Maybe a MacBook Air…..again. I had one a year ago, and I found it both beautiful and useful.
13.) Software; what do you use more often than not. What helps you get the job done? And what do you not use, but hope one day to incorporate in your workflow?
Elio: Gmail, Google Docs, Basecamp, Illustrator, MarsEdit, RTM, Pages and GrandTotal are essential for my work. I also use Lightroom, Photoshop, Tweetie and WriteRoom for both work and personal life.
14.) If you could change one thing about your desk, or the room it is currently in, what would that be?
Elio: My desk is close to the dreamed-of desk I always wanted, so the only thing that I would change is to have a bigger window to see the trees on my street.
15.) Workspace Breakdown;
Think of as many things as possible that comprise the setup of your office or workspace, anything from the paint color on the walls to the floor mat your chair rolls on, and list them out. Who makes your desk, how about the cabinet next to your desk, your lamp, the overhead light fixture? Anything and everything you can see in the pictures shown, give as much color and background on these items as time and memory permits.
