PlayMusic for the Weekend: Renee by Black Ships (aka Black Submarines).
So the editing of my reel is just about complete. I chose this song because I used a track by Black Ships (not this one) for my reel, and I’m kind of obsessed with the band right now. (Note: the band was originally called the ‘Black Submarines’ and had to change their name to ‘Black Ships’ due to a conflict with another band). The reel was a very eye opening exercise in that I just hadn’t seen all of my work together - in one place - at the same time.
In comparing the footage from the two features and three shorts I’ve directed, I saw motifs that I’ve repeated and need to retire, and also the progression I’ve made from project to project. With full humility in my heart I can acknowledge that I’ve grown as a filmmaker, and its given me a huge boost of confidence about where I’m going. My visual sense has grown to a more refined place, and I think I’ve seen tremendous growth in my ability to draw performances.
I’m going to have to wait until 7x6x2 releases before I post my reel online, but for now I think it’s a really solid showcase of what I’ve done in the past ten years and I can’t wait to start using it to advance my goals of financing my next project. Feeling ‘reel’-y great about it!

DONATE TO A FILM ABOUT A BLACK DEAF FAMILY
My name is Jade. I am an award-winning filmmaker who happened to be deaf. I am seeking support for my new film, The Shattered Mind; highlighting brain injury, hearing loss, teen life, and educational and medical decision-making. The Shattered Mind is a family drama about a misplaced high school senior overcoming brain trauma she experienced as a child, which is playing havoc with her emotion and her teenage lifestyle. This is a story inspired by true event, my experience.
My production company, Jade Films and Entertainment is using GoFundME, an online fundraising campaign platform to raise fund to produce the film. We are raising beyond $5,000 specifically for production locations to shoot in New York. If our goal’s not reached, we will lose all the money we have worked so hard to fundraise. In four months, we have raised over $13,000 offline and online, such as GoFundMe and Indiegogo. Our production budget is $20,000 for the film.
One thing we would like for you to acknowledge is that there is not one exposure or visibility about the black deaf experience about a family on mainstream television or in the mainstream cinema. They have a show called Switched at Birth; however, it is not diverse enough and does not represent our experience. To be perfectly honest, it is long overdue. That is why as the world’s only African-American Deaf filmmaker, I am doing this. My company has been producing professional and independent films for over 20 years. There are new and emerging African-American Deaf actors who are eager for to be a part of this project. This is a rare opportunity never been done before. And they deserve the visibility often overlooked by the movie and TV industry.
