Marvel Comics makes history with a gay X-Men marriage.
Marvel Comics’ Astonishing X-Men is set to experience a new sound effect on top of its booms, whams, and sknits: the bong of wedding bells. Specifically, it’s the wedding bells of Marvel’s first gay marriage between longtime X-Man Northstar and his civilian boyfriend, Kyle. After pairing up the couple in 2009, Marvel is officially tying their knot in June’s Astonishing X-Men #51.

dumbthingswhitepplsay reblogged stfuantiblackpoc:uhh i am not comfortable with how readily people are affirming the idea that asians have total privilege or arent oppressed
that was the explicit 2nd point bankuei makes and i am not seeing enough people problematize that
now its being reblogged by people like stfuconservatives, who are white, and i really do not appreciate the uncritical way this is playing out. white people like stfu take cues from the poc community, and we should not be sending such a false msg.
signed,
an asian immigrant in deportation proceedings from a country being destroyed by us imperialism (in which americans of color are complicit)
I’m waiting for people to show me at what point I said asians have TOTAL privilege or AREN’T oppressed. Reading comprehension is useful, try it.
Less doesn’t equal “not at all”. Just like how Colorism works - some people get oppressed less/more privileges than others. Doesn’t mean they get full privilege and no oppression, means they sit somewhere else on the hierarchy.
Also consider this: in full solidarity, folks would have hopped the fuck up to say something the moment the Patriot Act went down instead of assuming it was only going to affect “Those other people”. A LOT of APIA folks and orgs were silent the whole time. So…
This is how less oppression/some privilege gets folks on the buy in, and eventually it fucks us all.
So do you want to talk about what I said or put words in my mouth?
let me clarify because i dont mean to attack you, i really liked your post and agreed with it. i’m less concerned about what you wrote and more about the ideas it affirms for white and other peripheral anti-racists.
your 2nd point was that asians experience less oppression- let me clarify that- you are right that thats what you wrote and i didnt say that correctly. i apologize.
i already told you that i do not agree with discussing privilege or oppression in weighted terms so we will have to disagree here. i’d love to talk to you about issues that affect the asian american community but the way you frame the discourse categorically closes off engagement— that is my fundamental problem with that.
keep on fighting the good fight and my apologies for misinterpreting you.
I mean, I’m not shocked that weexist-weresist/of-praxis/cosmopolitan-fascist got the wrong end of the stick. Not shocked about colorblinding doing the same thing. But I am really tired of these displays & the insistence that there aren’t different levels of impact on POC communities from oppression. How do you try to police conversations where you get the facts wrong & insist that they be held in a way that suits you without ever once taking a step back to ask yourself what tactics you’re using & why they aren’t working out? Mostly rhetorical. But I wonder these things nonetheless.
It’s the unwillingness to accept that Black people matter, is what I take from it. All oppressions suck, but if you ACTUALLY look at people as equals? There’s no way I would say my oppression is equal to a Black woman. There’s sure as hell no way I would be talking about immigration, human trafficking, or labor exploitation without any reference to the fact that it Black folks are also targets of this…
Of course, if you don’t see Black people as mattering, then suddenly these folks are getting angry that they’re being asked to put Black folks’ history, lives, and concern on an equal level to their own (or rather in their head, it’s lowering themselves to Blackness…)
The desperate need to derail any conversation from Black concerns. The need to demand Black folks put other POC needs above their own. All of it points to the fact that treating Black people as equal is insulting to them.
And this is a basic litmus test: when people engage in Anti-Blackness, you see what they’re really after isn’t equality for all - just pushing themselves up to privilege equal to White Men.
It’s like how people are finally recognizing “Gay” or “Muslim” shouldn’t be an insult, but they still haven’t figured out “Black” shouldn’t be either.
But you know, these people keep sitting down at the table trying to order a dish of Equality but not for everyone and wonder why it ain’t getting served.
Bolding for emphasis and because Bankuei is seriously on a role today.

Hawaii to become first U.S. state to ban plastic bags at checkout in every county
Hawaii is slated to become the first state in the nation to ban plastic bags at checkouts in every county.
“This is groundbreaking,” said Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle, according to msnbc.com.
Carlisle signed off on the ban last week, joining Honolulu County with the state’s three other counties, which had already passed the ban.
“By signing this environmentally friendly bill, Honolulu joined our neighbor island countries. Hawaii has become the only state in the United States where every county has plastic bag legislation.” Carlisle said.
The change goes into effect on July 15, 2015, giving retailers “plenty of time to get ready,” he told msnbc.com.
“Retailers will be able to use up their inventory of bags and make arrangements to educate the public on the importance of bringing their own bag,” Carlisle said.
Bans are already enforced in Kauai and Maui counties, and Hawaii County’s takes effect on Jan. 16, 2013.
The news comes on the heels of a report from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography documenting a shocking increase in plastic waste floating in the northeast Pacific Ocean.
Particularly in a region dubbed the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” marine life is changing as creatures ingest plastic at alarming rates.
The bans passed after a two-year campaign directed by the Sierra Club, an environmental group.
“Passing the bans did take an effort — change always does — but people seemed to understand the need for such an effort,” Robert Harris, director of the Sierra Club’s Hawaii chapter, told msnbc.com.
“Being a marine state, perhaps, we are exposed more directly to the impacts of plastic pollution and the damage it does to our environment,” he said.
“People in Hawaii are more likely to be in the water or in the outdoors and see the modern-day tumbleweed — plastic bags — in the environment.”
