Economy is a daily concern, and will continue to be so. That characteristic is embedded in the etymology of the word “economy” itself, meaning “household management”. Household is a home, a family. It’s the people living together in one house collectively. That is exactly what our planet and our humanity are.
“Humanity has passed through a long history of one-sidedness and of a social condition that has always contained the potential of destruction, despite its creative achievements in technology. The great project of our time must be to open the other eye: to see all-sidedly and wholly, to heal and transcend the cleavage between humanity and nature that came with early wisdom.” (Murray Bookchin, U.S. environmentalist).
Economy should be about managing our planet in accordance with the fundamental principles of ecology. That is a sustainable economy.
In a battered, overcrowded and poorly managed planet, sustainability is the only good and viable alternative. Sustainability is a long term commitment and a long term investment which will benefit us all.
Economy and ecology are not conflicting terms, but rather compatible ones. Caring about the planet is innate in all of us. If you were given the option to either swim in polluted waters or enjoy the pristine, untouched beach of an island, we know exactly which will be your preference. So, why don’t we follow our instincts? Let’s be smart and think about the ecology first!
