    Beach House - The Hours
    Submissions Week 2013

After their impeccable 2010 release Teen Dream, where could Beach House possibly go? How could they possibly get any better? However, last year’s Bloom puts those concerns to rest and beyond. At this point in the game, it has become clear that the duo operates by perfecting their sound instead of drastically changing it from one release to the next. In this way, Bloom is their most fully fleshed-out and sonically whole record. Moreover, it has become one of my go-to albums for anything and everything from walking to class to late night paper writing.

From the very first listen, ‘The Hours’ has always stood out to me, and the warmer weather has made it all the more pertinent and necessary. As usual, Scally’s guitar riffs are in perfect sync with Legrand’s vocals and keyboard. The song is quite an unexpected burst of energy with more prominent percussion adding another level to their already layered sound. A track this beautifully rich could have only come from the duo building and developing their dreamy repertoire over the course of four albums. A common complaint about Beach House and their music is that its sometimes slow tendencies induce sleep and drowsiness. But in ‘The Hours,’ that is hardly the case. The sun is out and it’s shining through the blinds. Just open your (‘frightened’) eyes.

Colin Stetson is—and not to exaggerate here—a jaw-dropping saxophonist. He makes circular breathing look as easy as eating a burrito daily (whoops).

Tomorrow night he brings his left field jazz to the stage.

Alt-J at The Roseland Theater (4/8)

By substantially setting the bar for future shows I’d be attending in Portland, Alt-J carried out a performance that goes down as one of my favorites so far since moving here.  Selling out the show months in advance, Alt-J held true to their hype as being one of the most listened to artists since the release of An Awesome Wave last year.  “Alt-J is their own genre,” explains one of the show attendees upon asking them what category of music they would put Alt-J in.   Coming from a band with lyrics containing references to Where The Wild Things Are, suspenseful music videos (if you don’t know what I’m talking about watch the video for “Breezeblocks”), and making the bill for almost every major music festival this summer, these college buds from Britain are keeping audiences buzzed.

Opening the set with “Intro”, there wasn’t much for the band to change up from their last show in Seattle (and any show for that matter) since a good portion of their debut album is played consecutively.  Their set was pretty much the album with a few covers here and there and then a vivacious ending with “Taro”.  Here’s the setlist:

                Intro

                (Ripe & Ruin)

                Tessellate

                Something Good

                Buffalo

                Dissolve Me

                Slow Dre (Kylie Minogue cover)

                Matilda

                (Guitar)

                Ms

                Breezeblocks

                Encore:

                Hand-Made

                A Real Hero (College cover)

                Taro

The community of Alt-J fans brought the greatest amount of energy that night at Roseland.  Having a packed room (upstairs as well as the main floor) kept people close together, but that didn’t stop a good number of fans from dancing.  Lead singer, Joe Newman, oozed sex appeal with minimal performance effort but nailed it in the sense that their music calls for his tranquil and harmonic vocals more than a rambunctious front man.  Looking out into the crowd at various points during the show, I was able to feel everyone’s deep admiration to either some lyric in the album or the album as whole-especially when the mic was turned to audience at points during “Matilda”. Raising our triangles in the air when the band dispersed off stage made a perfect end to night.
