ghostisborn reblogged girlwithfoureyes:
today at work I caught a lot of flack from a co-worker about my choices when it comes to music. particularly my choice of #1 favorite band of 10+ years (crazy that it’s been over 10 years now!) they proceeded to tell me that i need a “real hobby” besides spending money on a band that “doesn’t even…
Wow, fuck your co-workers.

Cashier: Would you like lettuce and tomato on that?
Me: No, I ordered pastrami.
Cashier: Yes, would you like lettuce and tomato on that?
Me: No. I ordered pastrami.
Cashier: Soooo, no lettuce or tomato?
Me: On a pastrami sandwich? Why in God’s name would I do that? No. No lettuce. No tomato. Pastrami. Rye bread. Spicy mustard. Nothing else. -

Fuuuuuuuuuuuck do I miss New York City
My Wife and Moe, obviously, but also all the friends. So many friends. And the rest, too, the maitre d’s and bartenders and doormen and waiters and that lovely Korean family that does our laundry and tailoring, and Oscar the grill man at the cafe where I eat breakfast. Ali and all his subversive pals at the bagel shop who have been way too “welcome comrade” with me since they saw me wearing Sinn Fein gear. I miss Angelo, the semi-retarded Spanish guy who believes Moe is his twin brother and invariably leaves Moe reeking of his cheap cologne after they hug. I mss Cholo, the neighborhood homeless vet/hustler/handyman/porter and most importantly of all, friend. I miss Mervin, the aging bodybuilder who is always out on the block at night and lives in a room packed with his paintings of 80’s porn star pudenda. I miss the gal from the building next door who made a pile of cash as an early internet fetish model and now sells excellent tacos late night at Snack Dragon. I miss the nearly identical middle aged lesbian couple who tend the community garden next door. I miss Blanco, who lives down the hall and always has the wittiest, most cynical take on everything. When I told him the story of Pat Tillman his response was “What a fucking dope”. Also, I heard that Cholo may have stabbed Blanco in a drug dispute. Never would have happened if I were around. Fuck do I miss it all, the greatest city on earth. I miss the streets and the smells and the tastes and every effing second I don’t live there sucks. I need me some East Village time. 20 Days from now, I’ll be back in you New York. And you too, Wife.

What a wonderful life
Around 1989-90 I was stepping out of the old Tower Records at 4th and Broadway and bumped into Joey Ramone. We chatted a bit, I showed him the vinyl I just bought, and we went our separate ways. Looking back I saw him begin to cross the street before stopping and retreating to the curb several times despite the absence of traffic. Years later I wound up attending one of his gigs with his mother as my date (a story for another time). I mentioned the incident and she told me he had some specific ocd disorder that made it difficult for him to cross the street. I miss those early years in NYC, but I miss present day NYC even more.
Heard Joey Ramone’s cover of Louis Armstrong’s song on the way into work today and was hit with an immense longing to be back in the city. New York is where I live, it’s where my home is, and my wife and dog. I miss walking down the street in the East Village and seeing all the folks I know. Want to take Moe to the Dog Run in Thompkins Square Park and have my wife swing by to meet us on her way home from work. I want to take Moe to the Japanese butcher’s to pick out some nice Wagyu for dinner, then swing by the farmer’s market to pick up veggies. Then I can cook us a nice meal and wait impatiently for the Wife to come home and eat with us. I want to pedal my bicycle around the village, stopping in to see old friends here and there. I miss the smells, the sights, the energy and the excitement. Pittsburgh has been very good to me but I feel like a little piece of me dies every day that I am away from my home and family.

New job opportunity
Me: My God, that’s a fantastic butter. Sweet cream, definitely from a grass-fed cow. Just a hint of smoke to it, too.
Wifey: You should be a lard sommelier.

This weekend the New York Food and Wine Festival came to town and again we were a contestant in their annual Burger Bash. After the dust settled the judges declared our B&B burger their 3rd place (2nd to Landmarc, 1st Abe Arthur) and then announced that B&B took the big People’s Choice Award, the second time in three years. Capon took the microphone and quietly thanked everyone and kissed his wife Lori. “Let’s go to Mexico.”
