Avengers – Dir. Joss Whedon
I finally got to see the Avengers on Saturday morning in glorious IMAX 3D, the ticket was a little pricey but for a blockbuster like this it’s always worth the extra few quid.
I’ll try to not post any spoilers at all J
I’m a massive Marvel fan and have been ever since I was a little kid growing up watching Spiderman and X-Men cartoons on a Saturday morning.
Although my knowledge of the Avengers is based solely on Mark Millar’s amazing two volume Ultimates comic books. I’m a big fan of the Ultimate universe and before reading those comic books I hated the character Thor and wasn’t a major fan of The Hulk. Miller’s writing changed all of that, he re-imagined them in a way that was still true to the originals but in a modern fresh new way. (We’ll just pretend Ultimates 3 doesn’t exist right…)
I always had faith in this film due to Joss Whedon, he’s not just a director they hired, he’s a fan and the finished work shows that it makes all the difference.
I’m not over exaggerating when I say Avengers is by far the best Marvel film to date, I bloody loved it. Every single minute of it.
I was worried that a film with so many characters all vying for the viewers’ attention it just wouldn’t work and that several characters would feel unused or left out.
The truth couldn’t be further from that, every single major hero got their time to shine in several scenes and so do the supporting cast. They each got their introduction, their personal confrontations, their laughs, their problems, their fight scenes and their conclusions.
The action is incredibly well paced and the scenes in which the Avengers scrap with one another is the stuff geek dreams are made of. There’s also several scenes in which characters are paired off and Whedon knows exactly who should be with who. We get to see Iron Man with Cap Am and Thor with The Hulk, all the boxes are ticked here. The final battle of New York City is insane and lasts for what seems forever, focusing on each character equally with not one seeming to shine substantially more than the other.
The IMAX experience was impressive, the definition was top notch. Even the 3D was decent, I’m not a fan of 3D but it was utilized well here although there was a portion in the middle in which I completely forgot it was 3D and wasn’t visually reminded until the New York fight scene. Maybe my eyes just got used to it.
What really made this film stand out was the dialogue, Whedon hit the nail right on the head. It was as if it came straight out of a comic book but with Whedon’s unique style, full of quips and witty one liners. Avengers is one funny film, with Iron Man and especially the Hulk getting some major laughs. That actually brings me to The Hulk, all his previous films have been poor to mediocre but here he fits right in, amongst the other super powers beating the living hell out of them and the aliens.
The cast as predicted on names alone is superb, with Robert Downey Jr as charismatic as ever with Agent Coulson and Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury adding the unpowered human element.
Tom Hiddlestone deserves major credit for his role as Loki, he was an incredibly impressive antagonist that you honestly loved at the same time as hated.
Avengers has everything a summer blockbusters should have, it has everything a comic book film should include. It’s set the bar ridiculously high.
I may seem like a raving fan boy but this film really does have it all, the script, the actors, the fight scenes, the highs and the lows. Best of all it will appeal to major fans and casual cinemagoers alike.
I can’t recommend this film enough, I was worried it wouldn’t work but I have never been happier to have been proved wrong.
Thanks Joss, you’ve made on fan very very happy. After the Avengers maybe Joss will get the industry recognition he truly deserves. Who’s laughing now Fox!
