We've created a system of emotional dependents who can only learn about their own fucking emotions from media (mostly music)
And I find this absolutely revolting.
So many ills we blame on society aren’t because “society sets double standards” or “society is oppressive,” but rather because “society told me to stop exploring my own emotions.”
The symptoms are everywhere. Those bands with 40 year olds with the emotional maturity of 7th graders? (See: Linkin Park.) They’re victims and perpetrators. So we end up with kids who think that somebody calling them fat means they’re absolutely horribly and abyssally depressed. And then they take actions that extremely depressed people take because they’ve introduced themselves into a societal role and are conforming to it. Those “no one understands me” kids who have it all and are depressed over nothing - get this - usually listened to that poisonous fucking music before and during their depression. And while the depression is real, it wouldn’t have happened if someone told them to actually explore their emotions on their own, in depth, to a productive end.
We have so many teen suicides not because of bullying; we have so many teen suicides because the emotional culture in the West is fucking nonexistent and hardly anyone can actually emotionally deal with anything. So everyone thinks they’re depressed over getting a bad grade in English or some shit and then they catch the Zimbardo complex and fulfill their role by killing themselves.
And this isn’t just a male problem. Society does the same thing to girls. (I’m obviously speaking about societal roles here, so please, don’t tell me I’m using cissexist language, because this is tumblr, and I know someone with no fucking perspective will try to say that.) I see it everywhere. Sure, it’s worse for guys, but I see it in girls too. People who’ve never even considered that maybe their emotions are more complex than “depressed,” “melancholy,” and “happy.”
Honestly, I can say I know very few people with emotional maturity above that of a middle schooler. I could probably count them on two hands.
