Sorry, just indulge me with this and then we can all start following kellycutronequotes.tumblr.com, which exists.
“Women have been taught that, in order to get to the top, we have to be secretive and plotting and manipulative, because a straightforward route to the top hasn’t always existed for us, and in many industries it still doesn’t. But I don’t believe in playing into those stereotypes. We don’t have to stab each other in the back, we don’t have to take things personally and break down when we’re criticized, and we don’t have to advance at each others’ expense.”
Ok ok and just one more:
“Your success is an invitation to others to use you as a blank slate onto which they can project fears, aspirations, and prejudices. This has been a harsh pill for me to swallow at times, but ultimately I’d rather be the one living the life than observing and making catty comments about it.”
There is a pretty remarkable moment about twenty minutes into Greenberg. The titular character, house-sitting for his brother, goes outside to survey the pool and jump in. As he examines the waters, a helicopter swoops by with its loud, recognizable, vibrating noise. It’s something that happens every day in Los Angeles, but that, as far as I can remember, has never been included in a film about the city (at least not so memorably, effectively, and honestly.)
Ultimately, Greenberg falls victim to the standard geographical and typographical absurdities (Silver Lake Lounge at Sunset and Orange?!?!!?) thoroughly discussed by Thom Andersen, but it’s moments like that that make me think it might be as good of a depiction of and meditation on Los Angeles as I’ve ever seen. At the least, it’s a movie that makes you think that Los Angeles is a city like any other, one that is reduced by the necessary essentialization inherent in fiction, but not belittled.
We went out with deputyjoev to the Liar’s Club last night. There was a photo booth. Can you tell? I got drunk and danced to two Lady Gaga songs. I blame you, tumblr.
last Saturday night mugwumpian totally did dance to two Gaga songs, I danced around the dance floor, and the crowd at Liars Club hung their heads in shame, more whiskey please!
