Harry: Hmm… have you ever fixed a nose before?
Luna: No. But I’ve done several toes, and how different are they, really?
Harry: …Okay, yeah, sure, give it a go.
    Luna: Episkey!
Harry: Augh! Well? How do I look?
    Luna: Exceptionally ordinary.
    Harry: Brilliant.

I love this picture! Anyway, I saw New Moon today and was not at all impressed. Nor was I very impressed with the arguments some kids used in their (verbal) battle about whether it was better to be a vampire or a werewolf.

First off, that is completely situational— you probably wouldn’t want to be a vampire in a vampire hunting party, you wouldn’t want to be a werewolf in a werewolf hunting party, etc..

Secondly, yes, Taylor Lautner is cute, and yes, you might find Edward hot (why?!), but that does not make either vampires or werewolves better. Choosing one person to observe does not give you the right to make a generalization about an entire SPECIES. That’s like being an alien and picking a random person who might have some sort of genetic anomaly and go, oh yeah, all humans have six fingers on each hand or something like that.

Why don’t we just leave it at everything and everyone must have some sort of merit— it’s simply the spirit of evolution. Oh, and that Edward and Bella deserve to be together because they are both selfish, egotistical, boastful people, while Jacob could do so much better than that indecisive, I-could-care-less-about-my-family-and-friends, anemic Bella.

Enough of my ranting, though— let’s just enjoy the very happy picture with the pretty plaid shirt and all is good and well.

    Song: Seeplymouth

    Artist: Volcano Choir

    Album: Unmap (2009)

There is a genre of music that is particularly good for passenger listening. That is, being listened to by a be-headphoned passenger in a moving car, bus or train. I call it microcosmic music: the kind of soundtrack that, song by song, builds its own dramatic and all-encompassing universe. These are thinking songs, they drown the listener in sound to inspire vivid images as the seconds tick by. It need not match the landscape blurring by outside your window: its tones might be sepuchral and bleak while the sun shines brilliant outside, or its melody riotously verdant during a winter pall. What matters is the build of an entire world within the rise and fall of one song, and Volcano Choir has made it a specialty.

The bombastic percussion in “Seeplymouth” is reminiscent of the music of fellow microcosm-makers Explosions in the Sky, but where their music seems a great sturm und drang set in a lightless void, this song is carried on mincing, expectant steps to its climax. Before it can arrive, however, the eerie vocals of Justin Vernon seep into the cracks and begin to transform it into something epic, crashing and primal.

Luna: I’ve never been to this part of the castle. Well, not awake. I sleepwalk, you see. That’s why I wear shoes to bed.
